What does the respiratory system do for us and what organs are involved? We have trillions of cells in our body and they are in constant need of lots of oxygen. Without oxygen we are in immediate danger. The respiratory system works together with the cardiovascular system to supply oxygen and remove carbon dioxide. Lungs, bronchi, nasal passages, larynx, pharynx and trachea are all involved.
How can we support our respiratory system? In addition to the general recommendations we discussed the following is important:
*Clean air supply, fresh outdoor air, exercise, deep breathing techniques, avoid environmental toxins, avoid smoking, avoid toxic personal care and household cleaning products, CoEnzyme Q10, vitamin C, and essential fatty acids.
What does our skin do for us and what organs are involved? The skin is the largest organ in our body. It is our protective layer. It is a first line of defense against invaders. Skin waterproofs us. Oil glands keep the skin lubricated. It stretches to cover our size. It protects and cushions the deeper tissues from injury. It is washable. It mends its own cuts and burns. It is a means of communication with our environment. It quickly lets us know if we touch something hot or painful. The skin makes and stores vitamin D. It protects us from sunburn and dehydration. The skin is an important detoxification organ. Toxins can be eliminated through perspiration, acne, rashes, boils, and hives. Because the skin can also absorb toxins we need to think about the type of personal care, laundry products, and materials we expose it to. This system involves skin tissue, receptors, sweat glands, oil glands, nerve endings, hair and nails.
How can we support our skin, hair and nails? In addition to the general recommendations we discussed the following is important:
*Essential fatty acids, beta carotene, zinc, non-toxic personal care and laundry products, healthy digestion, detoxification, elimination and immune systems. Hair and nails in particular require amino acids, essential fatty acids and calcium for healthy growth.
*Select only non-toxic, pH balanced personal care products and choose safe, non-toxic laundry products.
What does the skeletal system do for us and what organs are involved? Our skeletal system gives us shape, provides a framework for movement, gives us flexibility (joints) and protects internal organs. Bones store minerals like calcium, phosphorus and magnesium. Since minerals are needed for various functions in the body, calcium “deposits” and “withdrawals” are constantly made from the bones, therefore, our bones are constantly changing. With proper support we can increase our bone strength and density. The skeleton consists of 206 bones, cartilage, ligaments and joints. Support for our teeth is also included here.
How can we support our skeletal system: In addition to the general recommendations we discussed the following is important:
*Amino acids, calcium, magnesium, vitamin D, weight-bearing exercise, avoidance of acid-forming foods, essential fatty acids, glucosamine, and alfalfa.
