Living With Tonsillitis
I had a question the other day about tonsillitis.
Tonsillitis is an infection or inflammation of your tonsils.
Your tonsils are balls of lymph tissue on both sides of your throat, above and behind your tongue.
They are part of your immune system, which helps your body fight infection.
Tonsillitis often goes away on its own after 4-10 days.
Usually, tonsillitis is caused by a virus.
Less often, it’s caused by the same bacteria that cause strep throat.
In rare cases, a fungus or a parasite can cause it.
Tonsillitis is spread through the air in droplets when an infected person breathes, coughs, or sneezes.
You may then become infected after breathing in these droplets or getting them on your skin or other things that come in contact with your mouth, nose, or eyes.
The main symptom of tonsillitis is a sore throat.
Your throat and tonsils usually look red and swollen.
The tonsils may have spots on them or pus that covers.
Fever is also common.
If you feel like you have a cold, with symptoms like runny and stuffy nose, sneezing, and coughing, a virus is most likely the cause.
If you have a sore throat plus a sudden and severe fever and swollen lymph nodes, but you don’t have symptoms of a cold, the infection is more likely caused by bacteria.
This means you need to see a health care provider, who may do a rapid strep test along with a throat culture.
These will show whether the tonsillitis is caused by streptococcus bacteria.
If you get tonsillitis often, it may affect your treatment.
Tonsillitis caused by a virus will usually go away on its own.
If your tonsillitis is caused by strep, you need treatment with antibiotics.
Antibiotics can help prevent serious problems caused by strep and can control the spread of infection.
As a rule, surgery to remove tonsils (tonsillectomy) is only advised when there are serious problems with your tonsils.
These include infections that happen over and over or long-lasting infections that don’t get better after treatment and get in the way of daily activities.
Treatment focuses on helping you feel better.
You may be able to ease throat pain with the use of home treatments.
To deal with tonsillitis it’s beneficial to:
*Drink 6-8 cups of purified water daily as it hydrates body and brain cells, thins mucus, and flushes toxins (whether thirsty or not!).
*Purify indoor air.
*Increase essential fats (flax oil, omega-3 oils, fish oils).
*Explore use of Oil of Oregano and Mullein oil.
*Consume plenty of fresh garlic and onions.
*Switch to safe, nontoxic cleaners, laundry and personal care products that don’t emit toxic fumes/residues.
*Discover “hidden” allergies/sensitivities (food and/or environmental) that may trigger or aggravate condition.
*Dairy products are very mucus forming.
*Review my post on candida.
*Eliminate smoking, second-hand smoke, environmental pollutants.
*Explore the use of hydrotherapy and/or castor oil or onion packs.
*Consider a vaporizer.
*Avoid sugar as it “turns off” your immune system.
