A Natural Approach To Health
Living With Spinal Stenosis
I had a question the other day about spinal stenosis.
Lumbar spinal stenosis is a narrowing of your spinal canal in your lower back, known as the lumbar area.
This usually happens when bone or tissue—or both—grow in the openings in your spinal bones.
This growth can squeeze and irritate nerves that branch out from your spinal cord.
The result can be pain, numbness, or weakness, most often in your legs, feet, and buttocks.
It’s most often caused by changes that can happen as you age.
>Connective tissues called ligaments get thicker.
>Arthritis leads to the growth of bony spurs that push on your nerves that branch out from your spinal cord.
>Discs between your bones may be pushed backward into your spinal canal.
Symptoms may include:
>Numbness, weakness, cramping, or pain in your legs, feet, or buttocks. These symptoms get worse when you walk, stand straight, or lean backward. The pain gets better when you sit down or lean forward. Some people’s symptoms are worse when sitting and get better when they stand.
>Stiffness in your legs and thighs.
>Low back pain.
>In severe cases, loss of bladder and bowel control.
Symptoms may be severe at times and not as bad at other times.
Most people aren’t severely disabled.
In fact, many people don’t have symptoms at all.
You can most likely control mild to moderate symptoms with exercise, and physical therapy.
You may need surgery if your symptoms get worse or if they limit what you can do.
Surgery to remove bone and tissue that are squeezing the nerve roots can help relieve leg pain and allow you to get back to normal activity.
But it may not help back pain as much.
To deal with spinal stenosis it’s beneficial to:
*Increase weight-bearing exercises
*Lose weight to take some pressure off your joints; you can follow my weight loss blog at blog.dickandlenay.com.
*Eat calcium-rich foods.
*Take natural supplements.
*Get plenty of vitamin D.
*Eat fresh (not canned) pineapple and/or papaya because they contain enzymes that reduce inflammation.
*Explore the use of Arnica (homeopathic remedy).
*Consider Horsetail (herb) tea or extract.
*Eliminate acid-forming food and drinks (coffee, soda pop, dairy, red meat, processed foods, sugar, white flour products)
