A Natural Approach To Health
Living With Sore Throat
I had a question the other day about a sore throat.
Sore throats can be painful and annoying.
Fortunately, most sore throats are caused by a minor illness and go away on their own.
Several things can cause a sore throat.
Many sore throats are caused by a viral illness:
>The common cold, the most common type of viral infection.
>Infection of the voice box (laryngitis).
>Mononucleosis (mono), which tends to cause a persistent sore throat.
>Other viral infections, like mumps or influenza.
A bacterial infection may also cause a sore throat. This can occur from:
>Strep throat, which usually doesn’t occur with congestion or a cough.
>An inflammation or infection of the tonsils (tonsillitis) and sometimes the adenoids.
>Inflammation of the epiglottis.
>Inflammation of the uvula.
>In rare cases, a sexually transmitted disease, like gonorrhea or chlamydia.
Irritants and injuries
A sore throat lasting longer than a week is often caused by irritants or injuries, like:
>Throat irritation from low humidity, smoking, air pollution, yelling, or nasal drainage down the back of your throat.
>Breathing through your mouth when you have allergies or a stuffy nose.
>Stomach acid backing up into your throat, which may be a symptom of gastroesophageal reflux disease.
>An injury to the back of your throat, like a cut or puncture.
>Chronic fatigue syndrome, a condition causing extreme tiredness.
To deal with a sore throat, it’s beneficial to:
*Drink plenty of water, with Performance, to remain hydrated and flush toxins.
*Bee pollen, blackberry, calendula, and cayenne all have been known to soothe or heal a sore throat.
*Fenugreek used as a gargle can relieve a sore throat and reduce the pain of swollen glands. Add 20 drops of extract to 1 cup water and gargle with the mixture 3 times daily.
*Marshmallow root tea soothes a scratchy, itchy throat.
*Raspberry leaf tea is good for easing the pain of a sore throat as well as fever blisters.
*Hot mullein poultices are soothing to sore throats.
*Olive leaf extract has been found to be a good remedy for a sore throat.
*Be sure to cook all your food until it’s tender. Poaching and steaming are good methods of cooking to retain moisture.
*Cut your food into very small pieces – or, if necessary, grind or puree it. This will cause less irritation to your throat. Be sure to chew your food well before swallowing.
*Use frozen popsicles, ice cream, yogurt, and sherbet to soothe a sore throat.
*Avoid eating foods that are spicy, hot, salty, or acidic. These can be irritating to your throat.
*If you’re having an especially difficult time swallowing and aren’t able to get the proper intake of nutrients, try drinking an instant breakfast drink.
*Defend & Resist may be swallowed, chewed, sucked or made as a tea.
