A Natural Approach To Health
Living With Pinkeye
I had a question the other day about pinkeye.
Pinkeye (also called conjunctivitis) is redness and swelling of your conjunctiva, the mucous membrane that lines your eyelid and eye surface.
The lining of your eye is usually clear.
If irritation or infection occurs, the lining becomes red and swollen.
Pinkeye is very common.
It usually isn’t serious and goes away in 7 to 10 days without medical treatment.
Most cases of pinkeye are caused by:
>Infections caused by viruses or bacteria.
>Dry eyes from lack of tears or exposure to wind and sun.
>Chemicals, fumes, or smoke.
Viral and bacterial pinkeye are contagious and spread very easily.
Since most pinkeye is caused by viruses, for which there’s usually no medical treatment, preventing its spread is important.
Poor hand-washing is the main cause of the spread of pinkeye.
Sharing something, like a washcloth or towel, with someone who has pinkeye can spread the infection.
Viral pinkeye is often caused by an adenovirus, which is a common respiratory virus that can also cause a sore throat or upper respiratory infection.
The herpes virus can also cause viral pinkeye.
Viral pinkeye symptoms usually last 5 to 7 days but may last up to 3 weeks and can become ongoing or chronic.
If your pinkeye is caused by a virus, you can usually return to day care, school, or work when symptoms begin to improve, usually in 3 to 5 days.
Medicines aren’t usually used to treat viral pinkeye, so it’s important to prevent the spread of the infection.
To deal with pinkeye it’s beneficial to:
*Drink 6-8 cups of purified water daily.
*Increase your intake of essential fats (flax oil, Omega-3 oils, etc.).
*Consider herbs such as Eyebright and Bilberry.
*Use Enfuselle products.
*Try warm compresses (can use moist, warm regular tea bag).
*Have a diet rich in bioflavonoids (berries, colorful veggies, etc.).
*Eliminate toxic cosmetics, eye care, and personal care products.
*Eliminate toxic household and laundry cleaners.
*Eliminate poor air quality, which could be irritating.
*Eliminate chlorinated shower/bath water, which could be irritating.
*Eliminate “hidden” allergies or sensitivities, which may aggravate your eyes.
*Avoid free radical damage; check heavy metal toxicity.
*Eliminate hydrogenated or trans fats, sugar and white flour.
