A Natural Approach To Health
Living With Lipodystrophy
I had a question the other day about lipodystrophy.
Lipodystrophy is a problem with the way your body produces, uses, and stores fat.
It’s also called fat redistribution.
Since the widespread use of antiretroviral therapy began, the numbers of HIV-positive people with lipodystrophy has increased.
Today, lipodystrophy occurs in 30-50% of people who are infected with HIV.
There are 2 types of lipodystrophy: fat loss and fat buildup.
Men tend to lose fat.
Women tend to build up fat.
Fat loss occurs in certain areas of your body:
>Arms and legs (veins tend to show up more)
>Face (sunken cheeks, temples, or eyes)
Fat buildup is when fat accumulates in certain areas of your body:
>Abdomen (central obesity)
>Breasts (occurs in both men and women)
>Back of neck and shoulders (sometimes called a “buffalo hump”)
>Fatty growths in different parts of the body (called lipomas)
These are possible causes of lipodystrophy:
There are conflicting ideas about this.
The older inhibitor drugs have been implicated in causing lipodystrophy.
It’s less common in the newer medications.
The longer you take these drugs, the greater your risk appears to be.
HIV itself may interfere with the way your body processes fat.
More severe and lengthier HIV disease may increase your risk.
It’s important to be aware that fat loss can also be due to AIDS wasting syndrome.
Other risk factors for lipodystrophy are:
>Being obese or having significant changes in weight
To deal with lipodystrophy it’s beneficial to:
*Drink 6-8 cups of purified water daily to hydrate and flush toxins.
*Review my post on keeping clean on the inside.
*Breathe easier; purify indoor air.
*Increase essential fats (flax oil, olive oil, Omega-3 oils).
*Consume a 50% raw food diet: lots of fresh, raw fruits and veggies (organic when possible). Include fresh juicing.
*Consider liver and colon cleanses.
*Increase exercise, deep breathing, relaxation, stress release.
*Increase fresh air, sunshine, connect to nature, adequate rest.
*Deal with any underlying emotional issues.
*Consider skin brushing, Epsom salt baths, hydrotherapy.
*Ensure regular (2 per day) bowel movements.
*Decrease toxic exposures of all kinds.
*Investigate and eliminate “hidden” allergies/sensitivities.
*Decrease or eliminate any and all hydrogenated, trans fats, and deep-fried foods.
*Decrease or eliminate sugar-laden foods, white flour products, simple carbs.
*Decrease or eliminate processed, instant, chemical-laden, “lifeless” foods.
*Decrease or eliminate smoking, alcohol, coffee, soda pop, processed juices.
*Become educated about all possible side effects and detrimental influences of any medications or treatment procedures you are taking or considering.
*Research and address underlying Candida issues.
*Avoid MSG and artificial sweeteners as they are neurotoxins.
*Explore dental amalgam toxicity.
