Living With Dystonia
I had a question the other day about dystonia.
Dystonia is a movement disorder.
With dystonia, your muscles contract uncontrollably.
The contraction causes your affected body part to twist involuntarily, resulting in repetitive movements or abnormal postures.
Dystonia can affect one muscle, a muscle group, or your entire body.
Dystonia affects about 1% of the population, and women are more prone to it than men.
Symptoms of dystonia can range from very mild to severe.
Often the symptoms progress through stages.
Some early symptoms include:
>a “dragging leg”
>cramping of your foot
>involuntary pulling of your neck
Stress or fatigue may bring on the symptoms or cause them to worsen.
People with dystonia often complain of pain and exhaustion because of the constant muscle contractions.
If dystonia symptoms occur in childhood, they usually appear first in your foot or hand.
But then they quickly progress to the rest of your body.
After adolescence, though, progression tends to slow down.
When dystonia appears in early adulthood, it typically begins in your upper body.
Then there’s a slow progression of symptoms.
Dystonias beginning in early adulthood tend to remain focal or segmental.
Focal dystonias affect just one part of your body.
Segmental dystonias affect two or more adjacent parts of your body.
Most cases of dystonia don’t have a specific cause.
Dystonia seems to be related to a problem in the area of your brain that’s responsible for beginning muscle contractions.
The problem involves the way your nerve cells communicate.
Idiopathic or primary dystonia is often inherited from a parent.
Some carriers of the disorder may never develop a dystonia themselves.
And the symptoms may vary widely among members of the same family.
Dystonias are classified by the body part they affect.
To deal with dystonia it’s beneficial to:
*Drink 6-8 cups of purified water daily to hydrate and flush toxins.
*Review my post on keeping clean on the inside.
*Breathe easier; purify indoor air.
*Increase essential fats (flax oil, olive oil, Omega-3 oils).
*Consume a 50% raw food diet: lots of fresh, raw fruits and veggies (organic when possible). Include fresh juicing.
*Consider liver and colon cleanses.
*Increase exercise, deep breathing, relaxation, stress management and energy techniques.
*Increase fresh air, sunshine, connect to nature, adequate rest.
*Deal with any underlying emotional issues.
*Consider skin brushing, Epsom salt baths, hydrotherapy or add baking soda to bath water.
*Ensure regular (2 per day) bowel movements.
*Decrease toxic exposures of all kinds.
*Investigate and eliminate “hidden” allergies/sensitivities.
*Decrease or eliminate any and all hydrogenated, trans fats, and deep-fried foods.
*Decrease or eliminate sugar-laden foods, white flour products, simple carbs.
*Decrease or eliminate processed, instant, chemical-laden, “lifeless” foods.
*Decrease or eliminate smoking, alcohol, coffee, soda pop, processed juices.
*Become educated about all possible side effects and detrimental influences of any medications or treatment procedures you are taking or considering.
*Research and address underlying Candida issues.
*Avoid MSG and artificial sweeteners as they are neurotoxins.
*Explore dental amalgam toxicity.
