A Natural Approach To Health
Living With Agent Orange Exposure
I had a question the other day about agent orange exposure.
U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War ended in 1973, but the effects of nearly two decades of chemical warfare are still being felt by American veterans today.
Agent Orange was a chemical spray that was heavily used during the Vietnam War era.
It was often contaminated with dioxin, a potentially cancer-causing chemical.
Some studies showed that veterans who served in South Vietnam during the war have increased rates of cancer, and nerve, digestive, skin and respiratory disorders, specifically higher rates of throat cancer, acute/chronic leukemia, Hodgkin’s and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, prostate cancer, lung cancer, colon cancer, soft tissue sarcoma and liver cancer.
Current research has now found a 52% overall increased risk of prostate cancer in Vietnam vets, according to an analysis published in the American Cancer Society journal Cancer.
The researchers concluded there was no increased risk for low-grade prostate cancer from Agent Orange, but there was a 75% increase in the risk of high-grade prostate cancer.
These findings suggest that determining veterans’ exposure to Agent Orange can help identify those who may be at increased risk for prostate cancer, leading to earlier detection and treatment.
